Stir-up Sunday

Sun, 26 Nov 2017

Stir-up Sunday

Traditionally, the last Sunday before Advent is Stir-up Sunday, - the day on which families get together to mix their Christmas pudding, and everyone takes turns to make a wish.

The name originates from the Book of Common Prayer and the collect for the last Sunday before Advent, which is 'Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen'

The Goose Is Getting Fat

Mon, 27 Nov 2017 14:30

The Goose Is Getting Fat

14.30 - 16.30

Speaker: Imogen Corrigan, returns to talk to about the history of Christmas traditions. What's behind the Wassail and why do we kiss under mistletoe and let loose women into York at Christmas? This talk cannot possibly cover all of our traditions, but it gives a glimpse behind the scenes to see our ancestors preparing for the day, stirring-up puddings and dragging Yule logs into the house on Christmas Eve and the rituals that went with it. We see Lords of Misrule lording it over rowdy parties, learn how pantomime developed, and discover how a few carollers sent out a coded message. Join us to get into the Christmas spirit!

Wye Arts Association - April Cinema Evening

Mon, 04 Dec 2017 19:30

Wye Arts Association - December Cinema Evening (members only)

'Walk the Line'

Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Released 2005 "Walk the Line" follows the early years in the career of American music legend Johnny Cash. The young Cash sets out on life's journey battered by his brother's accidental death and an abusive father, who blames him for the incident. His rise to fame with such hits as "A Boy Named Sue" and "Ring of Fire" is countered by his struggle with amphetamines, barbiturates and alcohol. His instability, both financial and emotional, leads to the failure of his first marriage. The few comforts of his unhappy youth had come from the radio programs of June Carter, the luminous daughter of country music's first family. When their paths cross, it's her devotion and support that becomes his salvation." Rotten Tomatoes
